How to play Spoonz.

A complete walkthrough — setup, gameplay, how to win, and house variations. Most groups are playing in under two minutes.

01 · The GoalDon't get left without a spoon.

Win by collecting four cards of the same number — called four of a kind — and grabbing a spoon from the middle of the table before they're all gone. The player left without a spoon at the end of the round is out.

Heads up: Once anyone grabs a spoon, everyone can race for one. You don't have to wait your turn to grab.

03 · Who Can Play3 or more players. Ages 4+.

Spoonz needs at least three players to feel right — more is better. There's no upper limit; just keep one fewer spoon than players in the middle. Plays great with families, dorms, and parties.

  • Best with 4–6 players. The pass-and-grab cycle hits its sweet spot here.

  • Larger groups? Run multiple decks or play in rotating heats — the loser of each heat sits out.

04 · SetupOne minute to start.

  • Choose a dealer. The dealer shuffles the deck and gives four cards to each player.

  • Place spoons in the middle of the table — always one less spoon than players.

  • The player to the dealer's left starts. They are the only one drawing from the deck during the round.

  • At the end of each round, remove one spoon as players are eliminated.

05 · GameplayThe pass. The hunt. The grab.

The starting player drives the round by drawing from the deck. Everyone else watches their hand — and the spoons.

  • The starting player draws the top card from the deck.

  • If they want it, they keep it and pass one of their cards face-down to their left.

  • If they don't want it, they pass the drawn card face-down to their left instead.

  • Each player to the left picks up the passed card, decides to keep it or pass it on, and discards one face-down to their left.

  • The cycle continues, fast and quiet, until someone hits four of a kind.

Pro move: Keep passing even after you've matched. Don't tip off your friends — let them grab a spoon a half-second too late.

06 · Winning a RoundThe grab decides everything.

  • The first player with four of a kind quietly grabs a spoon from the middle.

  • The moment the first spoon is grabbed, everyone else can grab — fast.

  • One player will be left without a spoon. That player is eliminated from the round.

  • Reset the deck, remove one spoon, and play the next round with one fewer player and one fewer spoon.

  • Last player holding a spoon when only two remain wins the game.

07 · House VariationsBend the rules.

Spoonz is built for table culture. These are the three official alternative modes — each one changes the game in a different way.
